EARTH WARMING

EARTH WARMING

A new report prepared by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) warns that human action has caused widespread, rapid and unfavorable changes in the climate that, if prolonged, could be “irreversible.” In that sense, the new publication has become a red alert for the entire world.

The penultimate edition of this periodic study was released in 2013, since then more than 14,000 scientific publications were collected to constitute what would be the next and most recent report published by the IPCC. This text categorizes as unequivocal the fact that humanity is responsible for the warming of the atmosphere, the ocean and the Earth.

No one can ignore that in addition to the increase in average temperatures, extreme weather events are a disastrous consequence of human practices. It is not surprising then to witness heat waves, torrential rains or droughts that hit various regions, which are now more intense, frequent and in some cases unusual. The study in question showed this relationship between the increase in global temperature and the multiplication of warm extremes, heavy rainfall, agricultural and ecological droughts, in addition to the increase in tropical cyclones, the decrease in Arctic sea ice and reduction of snow cover and permafrost.

According to the study of the Panel of Experts on climate change, from the year 2050 the situation with respect to temperature may turn adverse because if the rhythm and usual practices are maintained, the projection indicates that it will not be achieved that the level heating temperature remains between 1.5 and 2 degrees. On the contrary, if no action is taken, it is estimated that by the end of the century an increase of 4.4 degrees would be reached. With respect to this point, the scientists limit that the last time there was a level of warming above 2.5 degrees was three million years ago, when human beings did not even exist.

However, a radical change in management could halt the vertiginous warming and deterioration of the globe. In this regard, the report indicates that a buffer measure would be to produce deep reductions in emissions of CO and other greenhouse gases in the coming decades.

When comparing global temperature levels before industrial activity with current levels, a 1.1 degree increase is evident. What is really alarming is that if this rate is maintained, future scenarios are not encouraging. In all the possible cases raised in the report, the 1.5 degree barrier is expected to be exceeded in the next 20 years as a direct consequence of the intensification of the greenhouse effect due to industrial emissions (gases such as carbon dioxide, methane and nitrogen oxides) from the burning of fossil fuels.

However, one of the IPCC panelists, Pep Canadell, considers that the situation is not yet irreversible because in the best and most optimistic of scenarios the 1.5 degree threshold will not be exceeded at the end of the century. In relation to this, the climatologist Carolina Vera indicates that the reductions would have to be “rapid, sustained and on a large scale”, so that over 20 to 30 years they have a positive impact.

Regarding sea level, according to the report, it is suggested that by the year 2100 the rise could be 40 centimeters in the most optimistic emissions scenario and 80 centimeters in the worst case. One of the repercussions this could have would be “more frequent and severe coastal flooding in low-lying areas and coastal erosion… Extreme events related to sea level that previously occurred once every 100 years could occur each year at the end of of this century ”.

Experts call for resorting to capturing the carbon dioxide existing in the atmosphere through natural sinks (forests) and, above all, technological solutions. For this reason, IC Corporation strengthens its commitment to the environment and the development of self-sustainable practices capable of offering real solutions to the great threat posed by global warming. Sustainability is a variable present in each line of action and each strategy carried out by the company.

Companies, society and governments cannot ignore the deafening red alarm raised by the UN thanks to its report that irrefutably shows that greenhouse gas emissions and deforestation are suffocating the planet and putting billions of people. people at immediate risk.

The Latin American IPCC researcher Edwin Josué Castellanos said in a statement to NTN24 that the extreme events of recent weeks show that much of what science indicated would occur in the year 2030-2040 is being anticipated and is happening now.

There are innumerable arguments to emphasize that the call is for action focused on reducing emissions drastically, quickly and sustainably. The work is joint and the problem must be faced with the sense of urgency it has to mitigate the devastating consequences that could lie ahead if a change in everyone’s practices does not occur. From IC Corporation, through the services of IC4S, the best efforts are made to protect the environment, energy, water sanitation are basic needs whose attention must be sought with priority, IC4S is a developed concept that offers integral and self-sustainable solutions to provide engineering, logistics, installation, operation and maintenance services in the areas of education, health, food, connectivity and security.
